The main hall of The Hague University is place called the Atrium- a very spacious, round hall that serves as the central hub for all activities in the building. Being the most frequented area of the university, it is filled with students using the several staircases, doors and hallways to get to buildings adjacent to the main hall. Our idea is very simple: We want to use this central building as a canvas for our expressions from around the world and surround the inside walls with a colorful band of large-scale photos.

Since the building is circular in shape, visitors will be presented with an almost 360° view of roughly 60 photos surrounding them, hanging from the otherwise grey walls- a sight that should differ dramatically from what is usually seen inside this building. We deliberately challenge the traditional way of exhibiting art inside a university in order to expose as many visitors as possible to the artwork and inspire them to travel and open their eyes to the vivid world out there.

Furthermore, the exhibition will be supplemented by a smaller area in the Atrium where each picture is displayed as a small print with additional explanation of the picture, the place where it was taken and the photographer who took it.

The centerpiece of the Hogeschool’s atrium is a large flat screen panel displaying messages to the students. This will be used to show our movie entitled “Flying around the world” several times a day. The movie will consist of Raphael’s photos of himself jumping into the air at various locations of the world. Additionally, animated satellite imagery will be used to highlight the location where the photo was taken. Through linking these two elements, we hope to achieve a more dynamic underpinning to the concept of “Flying around the world”.
